From a Mohawk-Algonquin family Kateri found her own path, away from the pressures of family expectation to a deep faith. Scarred by smallpox as a child she found a life of joy in her new faith. She is a patron of ecology, the environment, and a reminder that we never need be trapped between cultures when we can embrace all that we are.
Our mural captures the forests and rivers of Saint Kateri’s home. The birds, sun and moon represent her role as a Patron of Ecology in the Church. The turquoise colour represents a devotion among Indigenous Americans (particularly from the South-West where the colour has special significance) crafting rosaries and other items, connected with their Christian faith.
