Physical Education
Department overview
Our Physical Education curriculum inspires all pupils to succeed, excel, and develop a lifelong love for physical activity. We deliver a high-quality, inclusive program that challenges students physically, supports them mentally, and equips them with the skills needed to lead healthy, active lives.
Key Stage 3 curriculum
Pupils should build on and embed the physical development and skills learned in key stages 1 and 2, become more competent, confident and expert in their techniques, and apply them across different sports and physical activities. They should understand what makes a performance effective and how to apply these principles to their own and others’ work. They should develop the confidence and interest to get involved in exercise, sports and activities out of school and in later life, and understand and apply the long-term health benefits of physical activity.
Key Stage 4 curriculum
Core PE
Pupils should tackle complex and demanding physical activities. They should get involved in a range of activities that develops personal fitness and promotes an active, healthy lifestyle.
GCSE
To inspire, challenge, and empower students to reach their full potential, both physically and academically. We aim to foster a lifelong passion for physical activity and sport, ensuring students understand the profound benefits of exercise on their physical, mental, and social well-being.
Sports Studies
To build practical sporting skills, leadership abilities, and an understanding of contemporary industry issues. It bridges academic theory with vocational application to prepare students for careers in the Exercise, Physical Activity, Sport, and Health
Key Stage 5 curriculum
A Level PE
Through the OCR A Level Physical Education course, we aim to provide a rigorous, engaging, and holistic study of sport, health, and fitness. Our intent is to inspire independent, critical thinkers who deeply understand the complex scientific, psychological, and socio-cultural factors that underpin elite performance and lifelong participation.
CTEC Sport
By the end of Year 13, students will have experienced the opportunity, through applied learning, to develop the core specialist knowledge, skills and understanding required in the sport and physical activity sector. They will consolidate and extend their understanding of sport in the wider contexts of coaching and leadership, anatomy and physiology, the body’s short- and long-term responses to physical activity, the framework of sport in the UK and the organisations involved. Learners will also develop transferable skills such as planning, communication, adaptability and leadership through practical assessment and evaluation tasks.
Enrichment opportunities
Please see the termly co-curricular timetable for up to date clubs. We offer an extensive range of inclusive clubs after school including Football, Rugby, Netball, Dance, Athletics, Rounders and Badminton for KS3 and KS4. Anyone is welcome.
Positive PE Policy
- Our policy states that if pupils are fit enough to come into school, they are fit enough to take part in PE in some way and therefore must bring PE kit.
- If students are not 100% fit, they may take a less active role in the lesson and may be asked to take up an officiating role e.g to umpire/referee or to complete some analysis/observation in the lesson.
- If pupils arrive with a note and no PE kit, they will be asked to borrow kit.
- For students with any long-term injuries/illnesses a doctor’s note must be provided.
